神池は、丸く膨らんだ大瀬崎先端の中央に湧く、淡水の池である。色々と謎が多いため、伊豆の七不思議の一つに組み込まれている。
Kamiike (God Pond) is a freshwater pond that springs up in the center of the 
round-shaped tip of Osezaki Cape. It is shrouded in many mysteries. So, this 
pond is included as one of the Seven Wonders of Izu.

池を周回する遊歩道だけでなく、その周囲には他にも魅力的な施設があるらしい。だが、今回はスキューバ・ダイビングが主であったため、周囲をくまなく散策することはできなかった。そのため、神池界隈の紹介については後日に譲ることにする。
Besides the walking path that circles the pond, there seem to be other attractive facilities in the surrounding area. However, since scuba diving was my main 
purpose this time, I  couldn't explore the area thoroughly. Therefore, I will leave 
the introduction of the area around Kamiike for another time.
大瀬崎の岬には神池を中心に約130本のビャクシン（柏槇）が繁っており、一帯に広大な樹林を形成している。
On the cape of Osezaki, around Kamiike, approximately 130 juniper trees 
(Chinese Juniper) flourish, forming a vast forest in the area.

乾燥に強いという特性を持つビャクシンは、ここ大瀬崎のように、岩場や海岸沿いなどの厳しい環境下でも成長することができる。九州・四国・本州に分布する常緑針葉高木だが、樹林としては大瀬崎が最北端になる。
Juniper trees, which are highly resistant to drought, can grow even in harsh 
environments such as rocky areas and coastlines, like here at Osezaki. This 
evergreen coniferous tree is distributed across Kyushu, Shikoku, and Honshu, 
but Osezaki is its northernmost point as a forest.
樹齢が千年を超える老木も拝見できる。皮を剥き出しにしたような白い幹は滑らかで、縦に幾筋にも避けているように見える。また、主幹から分かれた枝が捻じれているものもあり、自然の作りし芸術一つ一つを眺めるだけでも充分に見応えがある。
The white trunk, which looked as if its bark had been stripped, seemed smooth. The numerous vertical lines made it appear as if the trunk was splitting. 
Furthermore, some branches that had separated from the main trunk were 
twisted, and just gazing at each and every piece of art created by nature would be well worth the effort.

陰りに弱く、成長には強い陽光が必須であるため、ほとんどの若木は２，３年で消滅してしまうらしい。そのため、このように自然に群生している場所は、全国的にあまり例がない。
They are sensitive to shade and require strong sunlight to grow, so most young trees apparently die out within two or three years. Therefore, places where they grow naturally in such clusters are rare throughout Japan.

1932年7月25日、国により「大瀬崎のビャクシン樹林」として天然記念物に指定された。
On July 25, 1932, the area was designated a natural monument by the 
government as the "Juniper Forest of Osezaki."
さて、外海でのダイビングである。
Now, it was time for diving in the open sea.

まずは再び、台車を押しながら先端と同じ歩道を辿っていく。神社の鳥居の手前を左に折れるのだが、ここで短い急坂が現れた。台車には、三人分の重機材を乗せている。台車を押し上げるには、男性3人であっても力一杯の一苦労であった。
First, we followed the same path as before, pushing the cart. We turned left just before the shrine's torii gate. Then a short, steep slope appeared in front of us. The cart was loaded with heavy equipment for three people. Even for three 
men, pushing the cart uphill was a real struggle.

ダイビング・スポットまでは、木立に覆われた細道をなだらかに伝っていく。一汗かいてしまったが、静かな涼しい小道を歩いていくと、心身が穏やかになる。
The path to the diving spot was a gentle, narrow trail covered with trees. We 
broke a sweat at the slope, but walking along the quiet, cool path brought a 
sense of calm to our minds and bodies.
先ほど潜った先端とは打って変わって、海は完全に凪いでいる。インストラクターさんのお話では、大瀬崎が風を遮っていることが関連してるとのことである。
In stark contrast to the tip of the peninsula where we had just dived, the sea 
was completely calm. According to the instructor, this was due to Osezaki acting as a windbreak.

そのため足場は悪いながらも、エントリーは案外に容易であった。
Despite the rough footing, entry was surprisingly easy.
実は、かねてから大瀬崎で潜りたかったのだが、それにはそれなりの個人的な理由があった。
Actually, I'd wanted to dive at Osezaki for a long time. I had a personal reason 
for that.

スキューバ・ダイビングを始めた頃、これからは海中動画撮影をしていきたいと、当時、私の専属だった川奈のインストラクターに伝えた。すると、動画をメインにしているユーチューバーをご紹介いただいていた。その方が、大瀬崎を絶賛していたのである。
When I first started scuba diving, I told my instructor at Kawana, who was my 
personal instructor at the time, that I wanted to start filming underwater videos. So, e introduced me to a YouTuber who focused on videos. When I watched his YouTube video, that person highly praised Osezaki.

不思議な良縁に恵まれた。4月に開催された池袋のダイビング・フェアで、ご本人に遭遇することができた。動画で拝見できる人柄そのままなので、勝手な親近感が湧いてしまった。早速、色々とお話を聞かせていただきつつ写真集を購入し、サインをいただいてきた。
I was blessed with a wonderful and unexpected encounter. I could meet him in person at the Ikebukuro Diving Fair held in April. He was exactly the same 
person I'd seen in YouTuve videos, so I felt a familiar sense immediately. I 
bought his photo book and got his autograph without hesitation while listening 
to his various stories about scuba diving.
